As some of you know and most don't, since arriving in New York at a curiously similar time, I've worked behind the threads supporting - Why I was asked only just last month - simply because I believe. Which means I can't help but. He's making, it's growing. That is the greatest life. And/but each season everything doubles except for the number of better-than-one heads and twice as many hands. The fast months before and sleepless nights leading up persist. There are inevitably near (?) disasters and so many stories that must be saved to tell until we're looking back. For now it's another after the last. Below is, extremely briefly, the last.

June 2008

I threw half of my belongings down a garbage shoot and put the rest in boxes. I left a mug collection and moved to a cottage of a studio on the water in Madison Park.
I slept in my best friend's bed and wore her clothes to work. I cooked alone in her quiet little kitchen and ran the hill until I couldn't breathe or see and then still.
When it was dark, I poured myself a quarter of a glass of wine and walked down cobblestones to the private dock, where I sat in a wooden chair facing the barely lapping waves and listened. And I looked at the stars. And I thought. Breathed.
I quit all freelance work in order to be alone and heal. There are no photos because I was hiding.
I resolved to finish my book. So I started finishing it.

September '08 - April '09
Seattle home on the hill. Queen Anne.

My best friend and I left the cottage.
Remember this from "Trading Light".

It was silent, bright and the air tasted like ice. The sun rose in front of us and set behind. I ran that hill every way possible, every day, in the rain, in the snow and in the dark. I got trapped in a blizzard and wrote for a week, punctuating with homemade martinis and lone wanders through the neighborhood. I felt like the only one there.

And there, there were leaves.

And then, I knew I was leaving. So, I started selling what few belongings I had left, packed again and started moving.

May, June, July:
My second-to-last home in Seattle.

Never bothered unpacking.

I continued to work on my book. Every.day.

And I ran, yet another hill. The longest yet.

August - October 11th
My last home in Seattle.

Still packed, naturally.

I finished my book.

October 7th ish
EXITing Seattle. Holding the door for the movers.

This is fire. This man is alive.

I admire most the wo/men among us who are conscious. Aware of their (our) mortality.

It takes courage to acknowledge this short life. To see the end every day and before, often, the beginning.

That sight further forces bravery. And forward motion. And accountability.

Convention is short-sighted. Tradition and sentimentality is optional. Escape, in my opinion, is death. I would regret every minute lost to a television or a nine to five if I regretted, but regret is life-lost too, so let’s not. Past-dwellers, groupthinkers, self-absorbed, blind or mighty, let’s not.

Consume consciously. Live. Dig your hands into the dirt, desire the stars and gather no moss – there’s nary enough breath for the both of us.

“It’s about exploding an image, tearing it apart, and spreading it out.”

Madison Square Park installation Scattered Light by artist and M.I.T. trained electrical engineer, Jim Campbell.

Pixels represented by 2,000 suspended lights fade and flicker to create the illusion of people – shadows – New York commuters that Campbell videod in Grand Central Terminal.

“Campbell pared down the video file into a set of very high-contrast images, and downloaded that information to custom-built circuitry (feeding five miles of wire) that switches lights on and off. The programming had to be very precisely tuned to the distance between light bulbs, to give the movements realistic shape and speed.”

To dodge doing a piece with “2,000 symbols of inefficiency as the medium” Campbell sawed open the light bulbs and filled each with LEDs.

Voices in the Subway Station features translucent panels embedded in the grass. Each lights up in synchrony with audio recorded inside the New York City subway system; they flicker in accordance with people's conversations, sometimes a running stream of light as a train passes. No sound is played with the piece -- it synaesthetically represents the voices as light, which Campbell calls "informationally minimal." Campbell says he's intrigued by 'Voices' and the possibility of representing information as minimally as possible.

On behalf of TrendLand, I was invited to the exclusive preview of the Six Scents Series Three debut in New York. Barely a dozen of us sat down with the perfumers for an intimate scent sampling and storytelling session at the Givaudan fragrance offices before the series was released. From the Tavi-scripted, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld starring documentary film to the candidness of the collaboration between artists, the evening was truly enjoyable, informative and inspiring.

At the peak of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is self-actualization. Self-actualization is described as "…the desire for self-fulfillment, namely, to tendency for him to become actualized in what he is potentially."

Characteristics of self-actualized people:

Self-Acceptance and Democratic World View

Self-actualized people tend to accept themselves and others as they are. They tend to lack inhibition and are able to enjoy themselves and their lives free of guilt. Other people are treated the same regardless of background, current status or other socio-economic and cultural factors.

Realistic

Another major characteristic of self-actualized people is a sense of realism. Rather than being fearful of things that are different or unknown, the self-actualized individual is able to view things logically and rationally.

Problem-Centered

Self-actualized individuals are often motivated by a strong sense of personal ethics and responsibility. They enjoy solving real-world problems and are often concerned with helping other people improve their own lives.

Autonomy

The self-actualized individual does not conform to other people's ideas of happiness or contentment. This original perspective allows the individual to live in the moment and appreciate the beauty of each experience.

Solitude and Privacy

Philosophical Sense of Humor

Self-actualized individuals generally have a thoughtful sense of humor. They are able to enjoy the humor in situations and laugh at themselves, but they do not ridicule or make fun at the expense of another person's feelings.

Spontaneity

Another characteristic of self-actualized people is a tendency to be open, unconventional and spontaneous. While these people are able to follow generally accepted social expectations, they do not feel confined by these norms in their thoughts or behaviors.

Enjoying the Journey

While self-actualized people have concrete goals, they do not see things as simply a means to an end. The journey toward achieving a goal is just as important and enjoyable as actually accomplishing the goal.

Peak Experiences

Self-actualization is also characterized by having frequent peak experiences. According to Maslow, "Feelings of limitless horizons opening up to the vision, the feeling of being simultaneously more powerful and also more helpless than one ever was before, the feeling of ecstasy and wonder and awe, the loss of placement in time and space with, finally, the conviction that something extremely important and valuable had happened, so that the subject was to some extent transformed and strengthened even in his daily life by such experiences."

"Scent is directly related to memory. It is something of a sensory path, evoking snapshots of one's past as you smell it. It has the power to transport you from the room in which you stand, to a place buried within the depths of your memory. I wanted to demonstrate that scent can take you on a journey.

In making this film I wanted to avoid any element of exclusivity. I believe that ideas are free. That in order to engage with an idea, you should share it. The prospect of strangers stumbling across my film online and perhaps passing it on, is gratifying. I'm not a commercial person.

It is the creative process that fascinates me.

It’s raining lightly. Or is that snow? But, it’s warm. I can barely feel it on my forearms. We’re standing on a dock. Water in every direction. Why is it getting dark so fast? It’s that cloud. Light grey. What’s falling is ash. What was that? Something changed underground, a shift. What does that mean? The dock is shaking. Something is coming. It’s a wave, a rogue wave like the ones I write about. It’s black. We have nowhere to go. It’s going to hit us. What do we do? We’ll have to dive. We’ll wrap around the posts, hold our breath and hold on.

Just sent this tidbit to a friend. You and me, we're friends too so .. now you know:

I have absolutely no sense of direction. For example: I left the same Trader Joe's on Capitol Hill, out of which one can only turn left or right - right being the right direction - and went the wrong way (left) nearly every single time. Actually, a better example of my handicap might be that I made up a little rhyme about which way to turn when I left my apartment. And by "left my apartment" I mean: stepped out of my door and into the um hallway. Scary right? That's why I don't go to Costco.
